On Tu B’Shvat, we celebrate the roots that keep us nourished, connected, and resilient. Through these shorashim, we access Oneness- allowing the Ohr Ein Sof / Endless Light to flow toward us and through us. As we witness what’s unfolding in Minnesota and the world , it’s natural to feel overwhelmed—or even hopeless. Tu B’Shvat teaches us about resilience. We can return to our inner tree—a place within that is still alive with energy and vitality—and ask: How can we grow and contribute, even now? Like a tree, we have roots that anchor us— grounding us, nourishing us, and holding us steady in turbulent times. We are not meant to hold life alone. We rely on wider systems of support. Our roots draw up vitality and strength, so we can continue contributing, loving, and giving— even in times of drought. “She shall be like a tree planted by waters, Sending forth its roots by a stream: It does not sense the coming of heat, Its leaves are ever fresh; It has no care in a year of drought,It does not cease to yield fruit.” -Jeremiah 17:8

So… why Tu B’Shvat, and what is Tu B’Shvat really? 🌕🌱 The Mishnah calls it “Rosh Hashanah of the Ilan” — the New Year of the Tree. Not trees… but Tree. Singular. Yes, we celebrate the beauty and bounty of trees 🌳 We honor them as teachers, plant them, bless their fruits, and remember: “The human is a tree of the field.” (Devarim) Our breath mirrors the breath of trees — oxygen and carbon dioxide in sacred exchange. Our lungs are shaped like an upside-down tree. Our spine grows upright and vertical like a trunk. We even share nearly 50% of our DNA with trees, and a tree’s rings resemble a human fingerprint. But why Ilan — one Tree? Because beneath all the many trees, there is one Tree of Life. The Tree of Life in Eden… and the Tree of Life as the map of our consciousness, our bodies, the cosmos itself. The mystics taught that on Tu B’Shvat, the Tree of Life awakens — sap rising like Divine light through its branches. All Tu B’Shvat rituals are designed to enliven this inner Tree, to invite sacred energy to flow through us once more. We are a microcosm of the Tree of Life. 🌑Chodesh tov lovelies!! 🌳In the heart of winter, Shvat carries a hidden promise. Though the earth appears stagnant, new creativity is stirring within the roots. The Gemara teaches that during this month the sap begins to rise—saraf—the sweet nectar of life awakening within the trees. 🌳As Sarah Yehudit Shneider explains, this time is: “the turning point when the plant kingdom shifts from death towards life….it’s is an opportunity to regroup, correct imbalances, and begin a new phase of health and healing.” Just as the plant kingdom transitions from dormancy to vitality, we too are invited into a new phase of our becoming. Like the trees, we too move through cycles of hibernation and renewal. Shvat reminds us to trust in the unseen realms, knowing that life is renewing beneath the surface. I bless us on this new moon that we slow down enough to feel this stirring, and turn towards what needs rejuvenation in our life. Tevet is a Hebrew month that invites us into what the sages call “the body enjoying the body.” This deeply feminine month is about moving intense emotions through the vessel of the body itself. Tevet can be broken into Tov-bat—hinting at a time that is good for intimacy. In the heart of winter, there is a natural pull toward warmth, closeness, and bodies coming together. And… it’s also an invitation to be intimate with yourself: with your own breath, your own skin, coming close to sensation, impulse, and life force. The spiritual sense of this month is Rogez—anger. A raw, embodied intensity. Not something bad or wrong, but powerful energy that wants movement and direction.
